AEW Rampage notes: Sonny Kiss Turns Heel and Joins The Trustbusters

August 12, 2022

The show kicked off with a Bryan Danielson promo talking about how he “will never willfully stop wrestling”. Daniel Garcia came out and Danielson and Garcia had a heated exchange with Danielson asking Garcia if he wanted to be the best technical sports entertainer in the world or the best technical wrestler in the world.

Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo successfully defended their AAA World Mixed Championships against Dante Martin & Skye Blue.

Gunn Club defeated Beardhausen (Danhausen & Erick Redbeard). Billy Gunn berated his sons and told them they have another match this coming Wednesday on Dynamite. Afterward, The Gunn Club refused to take Stokely Hathaway’s business card at ringside.

Swerve in Our Glory were interviewed backstage and agreed to give Private Party a World Tag Team Championship match.

An interview with Hook was interrupted by “The Reality” Zack Clayton. Clayton challenged Hook to an FTW Championship match next Friday on Rampage and Hook accepted.

Orange Cassidy defeated Ari Daivari. After their match, Parker Bourdeaux attacked Best Friends when Sonny Kiss ran down to the ring. Kiss stood side by side with Cassidy only to turn and attack him, seemingly joining The Trustbusters.

Announced for Dynamite Wednesday:

The Gunn Club vs. Varsity Blonds

Announced for Rampage next Friday 8/19:

Trios Championship Tournament Match: Trustbusters vs. Best Friends

FTW Championship Match: Hook vs. Zack Clayton

Tag Team Championship: Swerve in Our Glory vs. Private Party

Announced for Dynamite 8/24:

Trios Championship Tournament Match: Death Triangle vs. Will Ospreay & United Empire

AEW Rampage results:

*AAA World Mixed Championship Match: Sammy Guevara & Tay Melo over Dante Martin & Skye Blue in 7:15

*Parker Bourdeaux over Sonny Kiss in :59

*Gunn Club over Beardhausen in 7:01

*Orange Cassidy over Ari Daivari in 12:04

Hopefully it leads to more TV time for Sonny Kiss, even though I think Sonny is a ready-made babyface star. Decent talent, good athleticism, unique gimmick for mainstream TV wrestling with crossover appeal. Never seen Sonny work heel, so would be interesting to see the tweaks made.
