AEW Rampage notes: TNT Title match, Women’s Owen quarterfinal, Death Triangle in action

By: Dave LeClair

Rampage was a taped show from the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. AEW promoted a fairly loaded show, including Frankie Kazarian versus Scorpio Sky for the TNT Championship, Riho versus Ruby Soho in an Owen Hart Foundation match, and more.

Match Results:

  • Death Triangle over AFO
  • Shawn Spears over Bear Boulder
  • Ruby Soho over Riho in the Owen Hart Cup
  • Scorpio Sky over Frankie Kazarian

The show kicked off with a hot six-man tag match featuring Death Triangle taking on The Blade, The Buchter, and Marq Quen of the AFO. During the match, Chris Jericho named Butcher and Blade his Sports Entertainer of the Week. The match was full of action, and after going through a commercial break, Pac hit the Black Arrow on Quen to pick up the win for Death Triangle.

The lights went out after the match, leading to The House of Black making an appearance. They went out again, and The House of Black was gone.

Shawn Spears made his entrance while Bear Boulder was already in the ring waiting for the match. Spears started the match with his old “10” gesture in Boulder’s face, which led to Bear Boulder getting control for a bit. As you might expect, though, Spears was able to come back and eventually pick up the win over his large opponent. After the match, Spears beat Boulder down with a steel chair. He also spoke into the camera, letting Wardlow know that he is coming for him.

Mark Sterling said he won’t face Danhausen and Hook in a tag match with Tony Nese, but Nese said it’s fine, and that he can take them both by himself.

Is that Smart, Mark… to put $10K on @TonyNese?! The #PremierAthlete & @MarkSterlingEsq will collide with HOOKHausen (@730Hook & @DanhausenAD) at #AEWDoN (Double Or Nothing) Buy-In LIVE on Sunday, May 29th!

Riho and Ruby Soho had a quarterfinal match for the Owen Hart tournament, which was a well-worked and lengthy match that Soho ultimately won, putting her through to the next round of the tournament.

The Gunn Club and the Acclaimed met in the back, where Billy Gunn said they could be the greatest faction ever, but they need a hand gesture. They made a bunch of DX callbacks, but ultimately decided on “Yo listen” and “Scissoring” as their calling cards. Billy said he used his pull to get the group a match on Elevation.

Jade Cargill and The Baddies made their way to the ring to address Hikaru Shida’s injury. Tony Schiavone announced that Shida wouldn’t be able to compete against Red Velvet in the quarterfinal match in the Owen Hart Tournament and that Kris Statlander would replace her next week.

Scorpio Sky, Ethan Page, Dan Lambert, and Frankie Kazarian had a backstage segment with Mark Henry, which appeared to move the story of Sky turning babyface forward as he told Lambert and Page to “take the night off.” After Kazarian’s entrance, the camera crew showed Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti sitting ringside.

In a shock to no one, the former tag team partners had a tremendous match. Lambert distracted the ref while Page hit Kazarian with the championship. Kazarian kicked out, but Sky managed to pick up the win with the TKO. Sky pretended to be upset about the cheating, but he ultimately revealed that he was okay with it, and he hit Kazarian with a belt shot of his own. Lambert said, “I love it when a plan comes together,” as Page and Sky beat Kazarian down. Eventually, Guevara made the save as the show went off the air.
