To explain, obviously the in ring wasn’t the best match of the year, but no other match had me as emotionally invested as this match and it wasn’t even close.

Second honorable mention: Sting/Darby vs The Young Bucks - Perfectly booked, and outside of Roman/Cody, no match had me more emotionally then this one.

20. WORST MATCH OF THE YEAR
Probably some random TV match. I cant remember. Ill wait and see if anyone jogs my memory.

I gotta say tag team wrestling really took a back seat in 2024 compared to 2023, didn’t it. What happened?

Trips/WWE don’t like tag teams and AEW ran through all of their good matchups before 2024.

Ya, I chose the bucks based on in-ring but I wasn’t happy with my choice. Would have gone with sting/darby if sting hadn’t retired so early in the year.

I feel it’s been better the last month or so, problem is WWE love putting them in stables that tend to hold them hostage.

WWE has general issues with tag teams. They had the two singles guys in Judgement Day, both times. Awesome Truth existed as well. Than you had the same with A-Town Down Under. They were just given to Tanga Loa after Jacob Fatu won them.

The Young Bucks had the worst year of their careers since they were Generation Me. The matches were good, but them being the tag champs during that awful new Elite angle. They kept the belts hijacked and Private Party took a backseat due to the Continental Classic.

ABC in TNA were fine but TNA and would probably be my honourable mention. TNA also doesn’t have the biggest tag division either. Hell, NXT has a bunch of bumbling goofs in their tag division but Fraxiom stood out so well in their matches.

Longtime patron, longtime lurker, compelled to post because I disagree pretty substantively with a lot of the replies (sorry).

Actually I’m changing my answer to this. Nothing beats this. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The video only proved Punk to be a truth teller. Punk described the incident exactly as it happened. And fallout from that being that if Punk told the truth about this, he probably spoke the truth about everything else. The clip raised Punk and sunk AEW at the same time. Not to mention how Tony Khan lied with his HR fed line of how he felt like his life was in danger.

I disagree with some things here. He came across more aggressive in the video than he was saying. On top of that, Punk lunges at Tony Khan and a bunch of monitors are knocked over. To me, I viewed it as less of people lying, but rather both sides having different perspectives. I think that’s one reason why Tony did it. He had his perspective, and he thought more people would see it his way. I also don’t think Punk lied either.

I also do have to say that I was for this in the beginning and I thought it was kinda cute how The Young Bucks were blaming their loss on this, which came across as smarmy. It also did get Jack Perry more over. That being said, I was wrong due to the fact the ratings slowly started dwindling and that seemed to be the main trigger point. AEW wasn’t doing too bad at the start of the year. They even beat Raw and Smackdown in Canada in January. But, that left a bad taste in people’s mouths.

There are two sides to every story plus the real truth.

I dunno to my eyes it didn’t seem exactly like Punk described it. In Punk’s story he talks about it like he confronted him with this “aw shucks why are you acting like this Jack Perry?” attitude, and that Perry was the aggressor challenging Punk to get physical. It just didn’t look that way to me. I still think AEW airing the footage was the dumbest thing they’ve ever done and made a bad situation worse, but I still don’t really buy Punk’s side of the story either.

The issue is the footage had no audio, so all Tony accomplished by airing the footage was essentially giving fans a fill in the blank for narrative. The CM Punk apologists will think what happened was what they already thought happened, and the AEW apologists will do the same. The problem was the people in the middle were just annoyed that they have to listen to both sides continually whine about it.

The other problem, is the AEW fans who will always take the companies side were not going anywhere, but by airing the footage, you definitely lost many of the Punk fans and pissed off the neutral fans. Just a bad move.
