Big E. is set to defend the Intercontinental Championship for the first time on the January 8th edition of Friday Night SmackDown.

After an impromptu tag match where Big E. & Apollo Crews defeated Sami Zayn & King Corbin on Friday night’s episode, Big E. announced an open challenge for next week and it was immediately answered by Crews.

Thus far, it is the only match announced for next week’s edition of SmackDown at the ThunderDome at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Big E. ended Sami Zayn’s reign as champion on the Christmas edition of the show on December 25th defeating Zayn in a Lumberjack Match. It is the performer’s second time as Intercontinental champion with a previous reign in 2013.

Big E is entertaining but in a comedic, never to be taken seriously sort of way. I can barely buy him as a midcard champion so I’m way, way off the “Big E as a main eventer” bandwagon that people seem to be clamouring for. Personality and charisma are the most important things when it comes to the main event scene (which is why I’m also not on the “Cesaro should be a world champion” bandwagon) but it needs to be the type of personality and charisma that has people looking at you like you’re a big deal who’s clearly a few levels above others. Big E isn’t anywhere near that.
