To kick off tonight’s episode of NXT on the USA Network, Rhea Ripley clashed with Dakota Kai to determine who’s going to TakeOver: XXX on August 22nd to challenge Io Shirai for her NXT Women’s Championship. After a 15+ minute bout, Mercedes Martinez made her way up onto the ring apron while the referee was tending to Dakota Kai and she ambushed Ripley.

Kai followed up on the attack and secured her shot at the NXT Women’s Championship.

Mercedes Martinez is a part of the Robert Stone Brand with Aliyah. At one point, Robert Stone attempted to recruit Ripley but he was turned down and it led to Rhea defeating Stone and Aliyah in a Handicap match.

* Ladder Match — Vacant NXT North American Championship: Bronson Reed vs. Dexter Lumis vs. TBD vs. TBD vs. TBD
* NXT Women’s Championship: Io Shirai (c) vs. Dakota Kai

I think Io Shirai is great but there’s more mileage in Dakota Kai as champion in my opinion.

You aren’t wrong. Io has essentially one angle as champion and that is the Asuka/Shayna dominant champion route. The one thing is with Io on top you get too tier matches almost every time, not sure you will get that with Kai.
