New Japan Pro Wrestling has released the participants of the upcoming Super Junior Tag League tournament that starts next week, and the finals take place at Power Struggle in November.

The major news is that Dragon Lee is not included and will be replaced by Volador Jr., who teams with Titan. Lee was expected to team with Titan until recent issues with CMLL led to his departure from the company. After his family members Rush and La Bestia del Ring announced they were going independent, CMLL put out a statement that Rush and Lee had been released.

The Super Junior Tag League was going to be the first sign if Lee’s exit from CMLL would affect New Japan’s relationship with the Mexican promotion with New Japan opting to keep CMLL happy and use their talent.

Below are the teams that will take part in the tournament, which begins on October 16th:
*Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles
*Roppongi 3K
*Titan & Volador Jr.
*El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru
*Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo
*Tiger Mask & Yuya Uemura
*Ryusuke Taguchi & Rocky Romero
*TJP & Clark Connors

The first night of the tour takes place on October 16th from Korakuen Hall with the following tournament matches:
*Tiger Mask & Yuya Uemura vs. Volador Jr. & Titan
*Rocky Romero & Ryusuke Taguchi vs. TJP & Clark Connors
*Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo vs. Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles
*Roppongi 3K vs. El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru

Has any other wrestler ever competed in all these New Japan tournaments within 12-months?

  • New Japan Cup
  • Best Of The Super Juniors
  • G1 Climax
  • Super J Cup
  • Super Junior Tag League

Honestly I think he will probily be part of the World Tag League in Nov/Dec too.

Boo. No Dragon Lee makes this tourney less interesting, but there are still enough exciting teams to keep me following it. Now let’s see if NJPW can do the impossible and make World Tag League worth our time…

…On a more serious note, John, do you have any guesses as to where Lee ends up? I know that ROH looks to be the obvious option given the family connection, but given their precipitous drop in attendance and buyrate do they at all look like a reliable promotion (let alone one that’ll help a wrestler’s profile) to free agents right now?
