Greetings from Asheville, North Carolina! I’m taking some time to recharge and catch up with my family before the hectic holiday season ramps up. Surprisingly, I am not here for a wrestling show (if you can believe it)! I’ve been making soup from scratch, eating at heaps of secret local places and soaking in the autumn colors from a steam train cruising through the Nantahala Gorge!

Earlier this week Japan officially terminated it’s exceptionally stringent and rigid regulations for international travel. I would be in denial if I hadn’t already worked for several travel patterns ever since the date had been announced. I am one step closer to being able to actually enjoy more joshi wrestling IN Japan! There might be tears when I can finally open a Dream Slam Weekly with “live from Tokyo…”

Personal Highlight of the Week

STARS vs. God’s Eye in STARDOM’s debut in Tottori Industrial Gymnasium Photo (c) STARDOM

On Wednesday (10/12) STARDOM checked off another prefectural debut by having their first show in Tottori. For those who may not have ever heard of Tottori, it is a small, rural prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, west of Osaka and east of Hiroshima. In 2003, that is where I became ‘Karen-sensei.’ I taught high school for four years with the Tottori Board of Education and one year of elementary school in the mountains of west Tottori (near Shimane Prefecture). My very first apartment was literally across the parking lot from Tottori Industrial Gymnasium, where STARDOM held their first event this past week. The last time I saw any wrestling slated for the venue was the 2018 Super Junior Tag League when KUSHIDA and Chris Sabin were tagging together and Roppongi 3K were at the height of their tag team careers.

I have many precious memories in that gymnasium from school events, local festivals, some kimono classes and event some sports circles, but when I lived there in 2003-2008, pro-wrestling was never on the menu at the venue. Tottori is a small prefecture known for its famous sand dune, and known for its agriculture and fisheries, as well as resorts areas like hot springs and ski resort area. While only 246 guests watched the house show live, for the prefecture with the lowest population density in the country, it’s a rather good turnout! Oedo Tai’s Saki Kashima hails from the neighboring Shimane Prefecture, so it’s nice to see a little love for the San-in Coast! However, now it makes me want to visit my ‘second hometown’ much sooner rather than later!

Kanon has decided to depart Sendai Girls and retire from professional wrestling. She had taken time off to focus on her education, but during that period she decided to focus her attention on her family and other things. It was decided between and Kanon and SenJo that there will be no formal retirement ceremony or farewell event. Kanon debuted in 2020, and she thanks everyone for their support on her journey.

I really enjoyed the ~dream on the ring~ series because it reminded me of NXT Breaking Ground, giving the fans a ringside perspective on the journey of those competing to make their dreams of becoming a TJPW wrestler a reality. The fan vote closed on 23:59 JST, and the results will be announced on October 28th during the final video stream of the series.

UPDATE: Willow Nightingale to finally make her TJPW debut! After having unanticipated, last minute visa complications, The Babe with the Power is finally making her way across the Pacific to Japan. She’s scheduled for The Mountain Top (10/29) Osaka Edion Arena and TJPW Autumn Tour ’22 (11/6) Ryogoku KFC Hall.

Match of the Week: Chihiro Hashimoto vs. Takumi Iroha

Arguably two of the best wrestlers on the Japanese scene. I simply cannot get enough of watching either of them and what better way to enjoy both of their work than by watching them wrestle one another. It blows me mind that SenJo uploaded this match in its entirety, but if you’re curious about either wrestler or their promotions, this is only a small, but delicious sampling of what both companies have to offer. Personally, I cannot get enough of either of them and I would love to watch way more from both of them.

In the last few years, Iroha and Hashimoto have become names synonymous with the women’s scene in Japan. If you’re late to the party, that’s perfectly okay because there is plenty of room on the bandwagon for everyone to jump on!
