Last week, Hiroyo Matsumoto made the DSW 25 thumbnail with Dash Chisako after winning the Sendai Girls’ Tag Team Championships. This week, she stands alone after winning the SEAdLINNNG BEYOND the SEA Singles Tournament. Whenever I see a Matsumoto match, I remember seeing her wrestle Rachael Ellering (as Rachel Evers) and Toni Storm. I love her Lady Godzilla namesake, her absolute presence when she enters a room and her big smile as she is fighting her heart out in the ring. Like many of the talented joshi on DSW, I have yet to experience her in her element and in her home country of Japan. Matsumoto is one of those wrestlers who I want to experience time and time again.

I made the mistake during the first MYC by settling for second row, so I made sure that had front row for the second installment. While NXT brought Asuka into my realm of favorites, the Mae Young Classics were responsible for opening my eyes to the scope of Japanese women’s wrestling and to an extent the global independent circuits. In 2017, KAIRI (as Kairi Sane) joined by forever favorites list, and soon Io Shirai would follow suit in 2018. The hardest part for then Diehard Black & Gold NXT-Era Karen with her very limited knowledge and access to non-WWE programming was finding the right window to climb through or gate to hop over.

What I learned through the Mae Young Classics was that there was multiple worlds of wrestling that I knew little of, but craved to learn about. I may be late to the party, but I’m having a blast as I am slowly making my way into the fray. The more I look at old show photos and matches, that itch to pack my suitcase and go is getting stronger by the day. Until then, it’s virtual traveling for me, so let’s get started!

I started my Joshi Learning Excursion at the 2017 Mae Young Classic, but the MYC II (2018) really opened my eyes. See if you can find me on the Network!
