An accolade added to Eddie Guerrero’s résumé.
On Wednesday, June 28th, the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame is honoring their 2023 class and one of the names in that class is the late WWE Hall of Famer, Eddie Guerrero.
Guerrero is receiving the honor just three years after his father, Salvador ‘Gory’ Guerrero went into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame.
El Paso Times ran a story about Eddie’s induction which included comments from Vickie Guerrero, Eddie’s sister Linda, Dean Malenko and his high school friend and teammate on the school’s wrestling team.
Malenko: He was just as good at being a heel or a baby face — in wrestling terminology, a good guy or a bad guy. Eddie’s the guy you want to hug, kiss him on the cheek, then two seconds later, he could do a Jekyll and Hyde in the ring and you’d want to kill him, you wanted to beat him up. He had that kind of mannerism. Guys like that, it’s a very small list of guys. Eddie happens to be one of them.
Hector Rincon, Guerrero’s high school wrestling teammate and friend, stated that there were fellow wrestlers that wanted to put Eddie to the test because of his last name.
Rincon: He never gave up, he never took no for an answer. It didn’t matter that Eddie wasn’t the tallest wrestler, but he made up for it in wrestling ability and strength. His background in Olympic wrestling helped him in those matches we called stiff matches. There were quite a few wrestlers who wanted to put him to the test. They had a thing out for him because he was related to the Guerrero family. After I started watching his matches later on with WWE, he’s winning all these matches by cheating, that smile on his face, his charisma, I knew: ‘This was beautiful.’
Joining Eddie in the 2023 class are Evwella Munn, Jeanette Lawrence Castro, Larry Vucan, Pat O’Neill, Charles Henning Miller and Rick Hernandez.
