He feels some of those talents will not be remembered in 10 years.

Dating back to March 2020, Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts has been a part of All Elite Wrestling. In the summer of 2021, he signed a two-year extension with the company

Roberts is aligned with Lance Archer on-screen but has not been featured on television as Archer has not wrestled for AEW since late 2022

While Jake was a guest on The Ringer Wrestling Show’s ‘Cheap Heat’ podcast, he mentioned that he feels younger talents are not listening to him and he questioned the psychology of some of the modern-day wrestling matches. Roberts feels 85 percent of those wrestlers will not be remembered in 10 years because they are ‘flash in the pans’ and do not have characters.

Well, when you go out there and you keep it real. I always kept it real (in the ring). I didn’t do a bunch of flashy sh*t that everybody knows is horse sh*t. I didn’t waste moves, I didn’t hit somebody with a sledgehammer and let ‘em get up. I mean, my God, if I hit you with a sledgehammer and you got up, brother, I’m leaving. You know, I don’t care if your wife does own half the company. I’m still leaving. It’s just ridiculous sh*t man. You don’t wanna insult the people’s intelligence. My biggest b*tch is doing all this high-flying sh*t. In and out of the ring, over the top, through the ropes, triple (flip) over the top, you know? And the guy gets beat with a f*cking schoolboy. Are you kidding me? Are you serious? You do all this fantastic sh*t and then you wind up losing with a schoolboy because you’re too prideful to be beat by the guy’s best move. Me, if I’m gonna get beat, I wanna get beat by the guy’s very best move.

Oh yeah, absolutely (Roberts agreed with Peter Rosenberg’s point that AEW will start the show with those fast-paced matches). They don’t listen to me at all. Their idea is, you know what Jake? I got a fat f*cking contract, I’m gonna ride this. I get it, I get it but here’s the thing, ten years from now, half those guys, you won’t even remember their name. I say 85 percent of ‘em, you won’t even remember their names. Because they’re flash in the pans and they don’t have any character. They haven’t built a character. Jake ‘The Snake’ has not been in a ring since 1997, 2000, that’s 20-something years and I’m still (figuring this) out man. I’m barely keeping my head above the water. I’m being buried with people wanting me to do things… go here, go there, signings, signings, signings, signings. I get to these signings, I don’t see these young kids doing signings. You know why? Because nobody knows who the f*ck they are. They don’t. They go, wait a minute, I’ve seen him on TV and then they see how little they are. Holy sh*t, they’re really blown away then.

There is a new season of A&E ‘Biography: WWE Legends’ and Roberts is one of the names that is being profiled for the series

I don’t understand how you can work at AEW and feel this way about the modern “flippy” wrestling style. I don’t even necessarily disagree with a lot of what he said about guys kicking out of sledgehammer shots and then getting rolled up. But this is like hating movies while choosing to work in film production. Modern, high-flying, high-intensity, often completely illogical matches are a huge part of AEW’s brand, for better or worse.
