John Cena provided one of the more viral moments from this year’s Oscars, paying homage to a moment from the award show’s past with a skit on Sunday night.
50 years after a streaker took to the stage during the 1974 Academy Awards, host Jimmy Kimmel brought out Cena to commemorate that moment. But peaking out from a side of the stage, Cena informed Kimmel that he changed his mind about recreating the streaker moment.
Cena still had to present an award, so he made things work. Appearing to be completely nude — obscuring his groin with a ballot that had the name of an award winner inside — Cena took to the Oscars stage to present the Best Costume Design award. Variety reported that Cena wasn’t actually fully nude during the segment, although it came off completely convincing on the broadcast.
“Costumes, they are so important,” Cena said, causing a laugh in the Dolby Theatre.
Kimmel eventually put Cena in a makeshift dress out of what looked to be a curtain so that he could open the envelope that he was wearing. He then gave the award to Holly Waddington, who worked on the costume designs for “Poor Things.”
Cena wasn’t up for any awards last weekend, but he’s certainly a name people are talking about following the event.
