Mark Henry: If I were to wrestle MJF, it would be the best match that anybody saw this year

Henry went on to state that there were never plans for him to wrestle in AEW.

Episode one of Huge Pop with Donnie DaSilva and Jimmy Korderas featured WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry. During their chat, Henry dove into the modern-day psychology in wrestling. As he was giving his opinion, he stated that if he were to have a match with former AEW World Champion MJF, it’d be the best match anyone has seen in 2024.

You watch a movie like Mission Impossible. Oh my God, there’s no way they get out of this. Oh! Oh! I get it. That’s not happening in wrestling no more. Well, let me just go against a guy my own size and we can do a bunch of things to each other, none of it works and then all of a sudden, ooouuu, I slip and fall and land on top of him and I win. It’s not a compelling story. If I were to match with MJF, it would be the best match that anybody saw this year. Because I would make sure that he looked like a million bucks, because my goal is to make him look like a million bucks, and then I’m gonna ask him in return, hey, I know how to make me look this way. But we gotta do this and we gotta do this, and it’s not your place to pick me up or push me and run me. Now, you can dropkick me in the back and run me into the post. But if I’m 400 pounds, what is (that) gonna look like? You grabbing me and running me into the post? The psychology and the understanding of what to do is nonexistent anymore.

On the topic of being in the ring, Henry spent the last three years of his career with All Elite Wrestling in a behind the scenes role. He said there were never discussions about him wrestling for the company.

No (there were not talks of me competing for AEW). I’m an old, beat-up man. I’m not trying to have nobody whoop my ass.

AEW is inching towards their next pay-per-view, All Out. That event is emanating from Hoffman Estates, Illinois on September 7th.

There are six matches currently advertised for the show with four of those being championship bouts.

He’s 100% on the money. They just don’t wrestle like Mission Impossible movies anymore.

These rambling answers are a bit difficult to parse.

One one hand you can say that mark is delusional about having a match of the year contender with MJF.

But that’s not really the point he was trying to make. He make’s it clear he’s retired and not going to wrestle anyone. The point he is trying to make is that for all the different talent AEW highlights there isn’t a lot visual or physical differences in their talent.

They do have big men on the roster that can do great “david vs goliath” style matches. But we don’t see them much or they are relegated to ROH.

Thats why I’ve said for a long time, they should have put Keith Lee & Shane Taylor back together. Obviously it wouldnt have lasted long, with whatever is going on with Keith Lee. Im not sure if he is injured or ill or what. But the AEW tag division desperately needs a big man tag team.

The problem with that is a lot of these big men, want to wrestle like cruiserweights these days. They think it makes them stand out, but it doesnt when every other big man is doing it. I think they should pair up Big Bill and Lance Archer and have them dominate. I think that could be a hugely popular team.

Mark Henry became delusional somehow in the last couple months. First his victim blaming and other comments regarding Vince and now he claims to be able to have a match of the year.

I can’t think of the right word for it, but I think a match like that would be unfeasible, impractical and nonviable.

My brother in Christ you literally had one job (“It’s time for the main event!”) and you fumbled the bag. It’s time to move on.

These are very good points. Unfortunately we live in a day and age where people take a quote out of context and then go into “attack” mode. You really have to read the entire thing to understand his point whether you agree or disagree.

I just don’t really see this problem as epidemic as a Mark Henry claims it is. The general make-up of wrestlers today are more agile than wrestlers before, and mileage varies from person to person, but I’m not generally offended by the athleticism of big man wrestlers today. You can take the worst case scenarios of any group of workers that may not fit the mould you think they should and decide that it’s an industry wide problem.

It’s just hard to take these “Busted Open Radio” types of guys seriously when it seems like they don’t think anyone’s doing anything right.

I do think there is a fair criticism of how TK has booked big guys: Wardlow, Miro, Archer, etc.

But athletic big men are not a new thing. Would Henry be saying the same about guys like Vader and Bam Bam?

This.

Jimmy Korderas and Mark Henry are both in the camp of “WWE might want to pay me / give my relative a job / hire me for one last go - so must always be hyper critical of anything AEW related”.

Korderas has created a whole new engagement baiting presence online. The guy will never be critical of WWE, despite almost being killed by a falling to his death Owen Hart, on one of their PPVs.

These guys do not offer unbiased or truthful opinions in any form of media.

Take a look at this board – myself very much included. Nobody wants to comment with “I liked this” or “I agree with this.”

These guys are paid to talk about wrestling for three hours a day. No surprise that most of it is complaining and bashing what they didn’t like.

I agree with this. It’s all entertainment at the end of the day.

Exactly. These guys are being paid to do the same thing we all do every day for free. I’d much rather former wrestlers be able to make money to talk about wrestling, then working as security guards at 4am at gas stations. The problem is when their opinions don’t align with certain fans opinions, fans get upset.

Ya I dont disagree with the big man part. As for the last part, so essentially they are like every other wrestling fan on the internet lol.

I have no problem with anyone sharing their opinions, that’s the beauty of art, everyone sees it differently. Where I have an issue is when people are being dishonest and praising everything promotion 1 does, while criticizing everything promotion 2 is doing and this is not exclusive to any particular promotion, fans on both sides (which is ridicules to even say as its entertainment) do it.
