I’m only 21 years old in college so I didn’t get to live this era but thanks to listening to Jim Cornette’s podcasts and the Wrestling Observer’s podcasts, I began to acquire such an appreciation of Classic 70s and 80s wrestling. I’m so intrigued about the many different territories around the country and the different styles such as World Class, Mid-South, AWA, Jim Crockett Promotions, WWF, etc.
What are some of your favorite wrestling territories and some great moments you have looked back upon?
Looking back and researching, I love the Carolinas and Jim Crockett Promotions because of the colorful and charismatic characters such as Dusty, Magnum TA, Flair (in his prime), Ole and Arn Anderson, The Rock n Roll Express, The Midnight Express with Jim Cornette, The Four Horsemen. Man, I wish I was alive during those days because it seemed so magical.
Growing up in the late 80s every Saturday afternoon consisted of Stampede Wrestling followed by WWF. My favourite Stampede memory was when they had done an Owen Hart injury angle and when he returned to attack the heels (pretty sure it was Makin Singh) he did a moonsault off the top to the floor. Even at that age I knew how special Owen was. A fantastic baby face.
Came in to post Archie The Stomper Gouldie and Bad News Allen promos after Bad News attacked Stompers “son” and their promos were intense where Bad News gave his reasons why he did what he did with conviction and Stomper cut a promo that any actor would want on their highlight reel, but I can’t find it anymore.
In Dallas, the Von Eric’s and WCCW are still considered the pinnacle of professional wrestling.
A lot of the best of World Class is still on the WWE Network and in their past lives John and Wai reviewed the Christmas Star Wars 1982 event where the Freebirds screwed the beloved Kerry Von Eric in his quest to beat Ric Flair in a great, dramatic cage match.
