John Pollock and Wai Ting review The Dissident, a 2020 documentary by Academy Award-winning director Bryan Fogel (Icarus) about the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and Saudi Arabia’s attempts to silence international dissent.

They discuss the many revelations uncovered by the film including: the role cyber-warfare played in Khashoggi’s killing; a thorough look at Khashoggi’s history and his long-running ties to the Saudi Royal Family and MBS; the shocking evidence surrounding his brutal death; and the controversy surrounding the film’s lack of streaming distribution.

Look for our exclusive interview with director Bryan Fogel this Tuesday on the main POST feed. If you have a question you’d like to suggest, leave it in the comments below.

Synopsis from Google:

When Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappears after entering Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, his fiancée and dissidents around the world are left to piece together the clues to a brutal murder and expose a global cover-up perpetrated by the very country he loved.

Like you guys, I’d love to hear some more about the provenance of the audio recordings of the murder, how the Turkish authorities obtained them, and what their reaction was to finding every horrific detail recorded clearly for them. I can understand (and agree with) the idea that the brazen nature of the murder was part of the message MBS was trying to send to others, but it’s still a jaw-dropping part of this story. I’d also be keen to hear how Bryan found out about Omar’s part in the story, and how Omar’s trust was earned to the point that he was willing to speak. I have to think that someone in Omar’s position is now very cagey about disclosing anything that could point to his whereabouts or current activities.
