Wednesday’s edition of AEW Dynamite was the first week of their Bash at the Beach special featuring Darby Allin vs. Pac and Jon Moxley vs. Sammy Guevara with the winners meeting next week, an injury angle involving Moxley and the Inner Circle, a #1 contender’s four-way tag match for a title shot next week, Diamond Dallas Page wrestles at the age of 63 in a six-man tag, and Cody responds to MJF’s stipulations to get his match at Revolution.
Someone, other than me, not buying into Cody as a babyface was nice to hear. He has a natural heelish feel about him where I can never view him as a babyface, similar to Charlotte Flair (although Cody isn’t as much of a disaster on the mic as a babyface). Even in this feud, his “look at all the expensive stuff I own” promo a few weeks ago was way off the mark for the story they’re telling.
Why can’t a babyface be proud of the fact that he’s worked hard and is able to buy nice things? It’s not like he’s taunting the crowd and saying they are losers and will never have the stuff he has. He was taunting a guy who has been a dick to him.
I’m going on a huge trip next year and what I thought of when he came out was “damn, where can I get an outfit like that for my vacation?” It looked like a nice outfit to chill on a yacht and have some drinks.
I don’t know if Cody fits the rags to riches type story and even if he did, I don’t think flashing around material possessions works well unless he’s a heel.
Or if he has good theme music, in which case he could do whatever and still be a babyface…
Cody is an excellent heel and I was apprehensive on him taking on a face role with the company at first - but it’s clearly taking off and the fans are behind him 1000% - it’s like he can do no wrong.
I don’t blame them for running with it but would love to see him heel in AEW some day. It will make his betrayal and eventual heel turn all that much more satisfying when he eventually settles into that role - cause he’s a natural (no pun intended)
