The UFC 230 card from Madison Square Garden cannot catch a break with the news that Dustin Poirier is off the card.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported Tuesday night that the lightweight has suffered an undisclosed injury and been forced to withdraw from his highly-anticipated fight with Nate Diaz on November 3rd in New York City.

This news broke hours after the official announcement that Daniel Cormier will defend the UFC heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis, replacing the previous main event of Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks for the vacant flyweight title.

Poirier had fought twice this year with stoppage victories over Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez leading to the Diaz fight. Since returning to the lightweight division in 2015, Poirier has gone 8-1 with 1 no contest.

It is unknown if the 33-year old Diaz will stay on the card and fight a new opponent. Diaz has not fought since August 2016 where he dropped a majority decision to Conor McGregor at UFC 202, which was the most-purchased UFC event in history to that point (it is expected that this past Saturday’s UFC 229 card will top the 202 number).

Somehow, someway this becomes the Diaz/McGregor trilogy.

Through fuckery or just plain bribery.

As far as contenders to replace Poirier if Nate wants to stay on the card:

Currently Kevin Lee, Eddie Alveraz, Al Iaquinta and Justin Gaethje are free. Lee and Al are being looked at to headline the Milwakee card, and Eddie is currently unsigned. If Nate wants to stay on the card and fight at Lightweight, I predict he’ll end up wirh Justin Gaethje across the cage from him. Jorge Masvidal has stated that he’s open to taking the fight at 170, so that’s also a possibility.

I don’t know who else can make the weight on short notice, so we’re proabbly looking at Masvidal at 170 or Gaethje at 155 if Nate wants to fight. Shame for Poirier, but he should be allowed to sit back and wait for a title shot anyways, he’s earned it.

Lewis just got done saying he doesn’t have the cardio for a title fight…

get’s booked for a title fight less than a month away.

Exactly DC is Looking for an easy pay day and so he doesn’t get striped of his title before he can cash in really big against Lesnar. Lewis is the least threat to DC.
