WWE is to receive $1.8 million worth of subsidies and in-kind contributions to run its Backlash event in Puerto Rico.

That is according to reporting by Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics, who was told of the payments by Mariela Vallines, executive director of the Puerto Rico Conventions District Authority.

It is understood that $1.5 million will be paid to WWE, with the use of the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot stadium also included, valued at $300,0000.

Vallines told Wrestlenomics:

Both the Puerto Rico Convention District Authority and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company will contribute significantly, although the Convention Authority is adding to the agreement the use of the venue as an additional in-kind portion.

As Wrestlenomics notes, WWE CEO Nick Khan said the company wanted to replicate subsidy agreements such as the one the company made with the Welsh government for September 2022’s Clash at the Castle in Cardiff.

WWE and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company did not respond to requests for comment by Wrestlenomics.
