The WWE Hall of Fame and a WrestleMania match is ahead for Rey.
Come Friday, Rey Mysterio is going to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and that same weekend, he’ll be facing his son, Dominik Mysterio, at WrestleMania 39.
To promote his upcoming match and accolade, Rey made the media rounds and one of the outlets he spoke to was FOX 5 DC. He discussed the Hall of Fame honor and is still having a hard time grasping that he’s about to be a WWE Hall of Famer.
It’s shocking, it’s surreal, it’s mind-boggling. I’m still having a hard time grasping the fact that I am being inducted into the Hall of Fame. These are the legends that paved the way for us to eventually one day make it and I feel truly honored and blessed to be a part of this class of 2023.
There’s an interview that WESH 2 News conducted with Mysterio and he dove into Dominik’s growth as a talent. Rey expressed how proud he is and mentioned that when he watches Dominik on television, he’ll sometimes turn to his wife and ask her can she believe how good Dominik has gotten.
Incredible (Rey said about Dominik Mysterio’s growth over the last year). You can only imagine the pride that I feel watching him on TV. I’m on SmackDown, he’s on Raw. So to be able to just sit down at home with my wife and view his matches, hear his promos, just witness his growth over the past year-and-a-half or year since we were separated, every now and then, I’ll look at my wife and go, ‘Wow. Could you believe how much he’s grown and how good he’s getting?’ And you know, I hear the buzz, I see what’s going on so that makes me feel extremely proud of his work. It was very hard for him to walk in my footsteps or be in my shadow because of what I’ve created for the past 34 years. So it’s beautiful man. I am truly blessed to be able to see his growth and just enjoy watching him.
Dominik’s ‘Prison Dom’ persona was brought up and Rey said he laughed when he first saw Dominik in the role. Rey is loving that Dominik is establishing himself and becoming his own man.
I cracked up just like I did right now (when I saw the Prison Dom persona). A genuine laugh. I just love how he’s molding into becoming his own man. He’s not holding onto my name anymore. He’s creating his own name and his legacy and that’s what we eventually want for our own kids to do. But again, I’ve been enjoying so much, his evolution, within his character. Whether he’s Prison Dom or he’s the annoying son that wants to get his way every single time.
To close that conversation, Mysterio was asked if WrestleMania 39 will be the end of his career and how much longer fans will get to see him in action.
Rey is currently 48 years old and he said the number he always thought about stopping at is 50. He does not think he’ll wrestle past that number, but added that he feels he’s at the peak of his career.
I’ve always had this number in mind and it just kept getting higher and higher every single time just because how great my body has been feeling and overall, how since my schedule slimmed down, I feel like this energetic person that loves to go in there and perform on a once-a-week basis. Just brings out a different type of energy. But, I had 5-0, 50 was the number that I said I was — I cannot and I don’t think I will go past it. But to be able to be inducted and given such a prestige honor of being part of the Hall of Fame, it’s like the ultimate in your career. You always think that, hoping that one day when you retire, that offer is presented to you but here it is, you know? I’m in somewhat of the peak of my career maybe because I still feel great, I feel like I can compete on the level of other superstars but overall, it’s just a dream come true.
