Ricky Starks pulled from upcoming GCW appearances

Obviously, allowing for the possibility that there’s information we don’t have, it’s all so dumb. If it would be “bad business” to release him to (probably) go to WWE, why isn’t it “good business” to put him on your television show? If it’s not bad business to release him, then just do it.

This whole situation is so bizzare. Maybe someone like @MarkP who knows more can clarify

  1. Who is Effy exactly and why does their opinion matter so much? Is this just an idiot talent going into business for themselves or actually a big player on GCW?

  2. The owner this Brett dude just decided to take the L and not bother apologizing or suspending or fining this Effy person? So basically he let a random useless talent who no one cares about mouth off and cost his company a relationship with AEW and didn’t care ?

  3. Is there a relationship with Effy and Tony? Like did he fire this person or something? What why would they think Tony’s dad keeps him away from AEW that makes no sense

Why Ricky Starks isn’t on TV is promotional malpractice, in my opinion.

As for GCW, Tony can do what he wants but I choose to believe that the logic behind pulling Starks goes deeper than something Effy had to say on a podcast. But wrestling can be that petty.

But I digress to my main point: free Ricky Starks and get this man on TV!!!

Effy is one of GCW’s bigger stars. As far as I know there is no connection to AEW.
I personally don’t have any information into the situation.

At the end of the day, GCW is playing their role as the “outlaws”. And trash talking and punching up (things I fully support generally, as I have in the case of AEW taking shots at WWE), I think is fair. But what is also fair - is that those shots may get a response.

So trash talking, intelligently, makes sense. Running an angle on a show where Ricky shit talks AEW, and at the same time having other talent publicly trashing AEW and Tony, was likely one step to far?

And at the same time, GCW suddenly decided to act like AEW running Hammerstein was a direct shot at then. Which is sort of silly, when it was well known AEW had tried to run there at the end of 2023 - but it didn’t come about. And Final Battle ran for years at that venue.

I also see this as GCW walking a tightrope between playing nice with WWE and AEW at the same time. And at this point in time, is very difficult to do.

Lastly, somebody like Janela, who is always very outspoken, has never been overly critical of AEW or Tony. And despite a sour ending to his time in AEW, has remained smart about it all. There are ways to be “outlaws”, but also not be idiots, about it.

Thanks for the summary. Just odd to me - like WWE isn’t sending you anyone of value for this but AEW had and would allow talent to appear. Now you want to take shots and then etc and ruin it ? Seems odd especially if Effy isn’t management to initiate this.

Would be like Naito mouthing off on a podcast and AEW pulling out of Wrestledream. Seems so bizzare

Not for nothing, but have you ever noticed that a lot of the guys who were on the indies “just waiting for a competitor to WWE to give them their break“ are still on the indies?

I wonder if an angle can be done with this.

While it could get a bit of buzz, one issue is that it would put AEW in a role that you never want a company to be. The heel. WWE had that problem for 2 decades. It’s fine with building up a Steve Austin, but Austin is one of those wrestlers who is good regardless of the time period. After Austin, the evil authority stopped working. During this time, bad decisions were also made creatively, which ends up mixing fantasy and reality.

It has been done before, specifically in Memphis. They tried it with Tony Khan being a heel in TNA, but it wasn’t the same (granted there were no fans). So if you were to do it, it’s a tight rope to walk.

One way is they could have GCW guys with Ricky Starks invade during a C2 match. It causes the heat due to the strict rules and you could simply redo the match some other time. That way, you’re not giving a fuck finish because they will be redoing the match while trying to put the heat on the GCW guys. Maybe tie them with the Deathriders and after the GCW event, keep Ricky behind as a death riders member. That way, if he leaves, the deathriders kill him off.

Saw John and Wai’s segment on this. This is a horrible look for Tony Khan. It is not like GCW management said anything. It’s a performer. Grow a pair man. People despise pretenders. Vince as a promoter was a c**t. He knew he was one. He told you that he was one. He never pretended to be the man of the people and then turned around and did this.

Why didn’t Brett apologize or ask Effy to apologize?

Why does TK have to work with GCW - how does it help him?

If you are doing someone a favour your threshold of putting with their BS is pretty low

Yeah, then we can have two invasions going on at the same time with Moxley and friends. Maybe then the Elite can come back too and invade the invaders. Then the Hurt syndicate and Callis Family can also try to invade the previous invasion.

I think it’s years and years and years of Tony being a nice guy and just having enough. Effy is a joke, no reason to take any shit from him. He was crying that AEW booked a building that was available. Maybe GCW should look into writing exclusivity into their next deal if they’re so worried

Dude, did you even listen Rewind A Dynamite last night. John and Wai already covered. The GCW owner/manager already said the Effy’s opinions didn’t reflect his views. He said that he can’t control what his talents say on their own podcast. You are like MAGA. Making assumptions with half the story. What a stupid thing to say on your behalf. Literally shaking my head.

I know exactly what he said. I didn’t listen to rewind a Dynamtie bc I was working.

I didn’t think that was a proper way to address it. Yes he said those views don’t reflect him, etc. but he should’ve asked Effie to make that very clear and apologize and he should’ve probably called up Tony
directly and had that conversation.

I mean it’s fine that he didn’t in the end only he suffers. So good for him. I guess he lost a working relationship and talent with a bigger company? Sounds like a great business decision.

Would appreciate not being called stupid or MAGA. I assure you I am neither.

I think listening to the Effy’s clip makes things a bit more fishy when it comes to Brett’s clip. The most important word Effy uses is the word “our”. “Our” company.

Imagine if Kenny Omega talked a bunch of shit to CMLL. No, Kenny doesn’t run AEW but he’s a pretty important figure in the company. He can say this is “our” company, despite it not actually being his company. I think that’s the issue here and Brett is trying to have it both ways.

Effy isn’t just his talent. It seems like he’s one of the people Brett leans on for help and hell, he has Effy run his own show in Big Gay Brunch. I think just saying Effy is his own person is a bit dishonest on Brett’s part. He represents GCW.

Seems like he released some other bizarre rant. I tried reading it but honestly it’s sort of like listening to Vince Russo talk just sounds like a dumb person ranting seems like he doubled down on his comments about Tony though. Dude must really not want to ever get a bigger job than what he’s doing.
