Kiss takes a look back at the bout.
With Joey Janela being unable to compete against Kenny Omega on the 10/21/20 edition of AEW Dynamite, filling in that spot was Sonny Kiss. Omega went on to defeat Kiss in 26 seconds.
Sonny dove into that match while speaking to D.S. Shin of Ring The Belle. She said she is mortified by how she sold the V-Trigger. Kiss added it bothered her to a degree that she did not get a chance to prove herself after that. According to Kiss, the online reaction to her V-Trigger sell was not good and she feels it probably is the worst sell of the move. Sonny said Q.T. Marshall gave a pointer on how to take the move.
So guys, this is the first time I’m gonna discuss this, on camera (match against Kenny Omega from 10/21/20 AEW Dynamite)… Obviously, that match was not supposed to be me. It was supposed to be Joey (Janela). So, the change happened maybe I wanna say an hour before doors opened? I think doors were probably almost opening at the time. So I’m super happy, I’m hanging out in Cody (Rhodes) and Brandi’s room, like their office area and I’m just hanging out, chilling, excited. I got my outfit on, my makeup looks popping. First of all, shout out to Marandan (Renea) for that because she killed it. My makeup looks so good and I’m just so excited because I’m gonna valet Joey and it’s gonna be a great time. It’s an easy night for me. So, they put this little zinger on me like, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be you now.’ Baby, when I tell you my heart was in my colon. I was just like, ‘What? It’s gonna be me?’ Kenny Omega is one of the greatest wrestlers ever, right? This is like one of the biggest wrestlers ever. He’s amazing and you’re telling me I’m gonna wrestle him? No preparation, we have not rehearsed any moves, even though it was only two moves. Guys, I’ve never taken a V-Trigger before. There’s several different kinds of bumps and if you look at what I’m trying to do, I’m trying to do the T-bump which is what you take for a dropkick. That’s why it looked kind of awkward, because I was not ready for the proper bump. To this day, I’m like mortified by it, because I feel like that was one of the last times that they got to see me on TV so, fans thought that-that was just the peak of Sonny Kiss, and to this day, it makes me feel a way that I didn’t really get a chance to prove myself after that, you know? But as far as mishaps and botches, etcetera, what wrestler doesn’t f*cking have those? Sorry. Excuse me. What wrestler does not have mishaps, botches, sh*t that went the f*ck wrong? It happens. Why crucify me for all that? Because I know the internet definitely was just like, ‘Oh my God, worst V-Trigger ever’ and it probably is, let’s be honest. I was ready for the match but I wasn’t ready for that move. I wasn’t ready to take that move and Q.T. (Marshall), he tried his hardest to like, ‘It’s like a shoulder tackle. Take it like a shoulder tackle’ and I’m like, ‘Okay.’ We live and we learn and I take accountability for it. Nobody’s perfect. But look at me now, I’m that chick, you know what I mean? So, I’ve grown so, so much since then and you have to acknowledge that.
Further speaking about her time in AEW, Kiss touched on the idea of being linked up with the group known as The Baddies (Jade Cargill, Red Velvet & Kiera Hogan). Sonny feels the ball was missed with that opportunity.
I wish we definitely would have done more with that (myself & The Baddies in AEW). I mean, we were four hot chicks — we would have been four hot chicks together. It would have been a lot of fun. I feel like we missed the ball on that one. I think that would have been really, really fun and the fans were demanding that every week. It was kind of like, why not?… But hey, it didn’t and it is what it is.
Kiss is continuing to work independent dates since her time with AEW came to an end. She made her IMPACT Wrestling debut at Bound For Glory 2023 and had a singles match against Naomi (Trinity Fatu) at the post-PPV television taping.
