Sting is to take part in The Great Muta’s final farewell show in Japan, it was announced last night.

The news came after a surprise appearance by the Japanese legend at Rampage: Grand Slam, when Muta helped Sting and Darby Allin to victory over the House of Black’s Brody King and Buddy Matthews.

In a digital exclusive posted to AEW social media after the match aired, Sting appeared side-by-side with Muta and stated:

Man, what a history I have with this man right here…I have wrestled this guy all over the globe, especially in the United States, and in Japan quite a few times. 65,000 people at the Fukuoka Dome, the Tokyo Dome, all over the place and all over here in the United States.

Later, Pro Wrestling NOAH issued a tweet confirming that Sting is scheduled to participate in the ‘Great Muta Final Bye-Bye’ show on 22nd January, 2023. Sting’s exact role is not yet known but the tweet states that he will “take part” in Muta’s retirement match.

The pair have a long history that stretches back to 1989 when they faced one another at a house show in Huntington, West Virginia. The rivalry would continue, including matches at that year’s Great American Bash and Starrcade.

They also teamed several times, including in a well-remembered tag match against Rick and Scott Steiner at the WCW/NJPW Supershow at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th, 1992.
