THEY’RE SO 20TH CENTURY

  • Just a massive swathe of retirements as we hit the post–WrestleMania season with the following names all calling it a career: Arn Anderson, Beautiful Bobby Eaton, Brad Armstrong, Droz, Ice Train, La Parka, Larry Zbyszko, Nikita Koloff, Psicosis, Steve Armstrong, Vader, and Z-Gangsta
  • In that lot we see 4 former WWF World Titles, 3 former WCW World Titles, 6 former NWA World Titles, 2 former WWF Intercontinental titles, 3 former WCW United States titles, a royal rumble win, and 12 former tag titles across all companies
  • There was a time when Nikita Koloff was in the conversation for the best of all time. I’m not sure that’s the case anymore but he might have been the best the NWA ever produced.
  • Things in WCW are a hot mess with 41 year old Magnum T.A. being propped up as the face of the ‘new blood’ despite being 41 years old and having perhaps more world titles than anyone on the WCW roster save for Ric Flair (they’re tied with 7). Moreover, the confusion between nWo 2000 and Millionaire’s Club having all the star power but being at odds with each other and the New Blood is resulting in the fans cheering the star power of the heels and ignoring the babyfaces who seem to exist only to get Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo over

HOGAN NO-SHOWS SPRING STAMPEDE

  • WCW has announced on their website that Hollywood Hogan vs Raven will not be taking place tonight as Hollywood Hogan has not arrived at the venue.
  • Whether this is a work or a shoot is anyone’s guess but what we know for certain is that Hollywood Hogan will not be at Spring Stampede tonight

VAL VENIS TITLE REIGN EXPLAINED

  • On the post Backlash Raw there was a segment involving Ken Shamrock and Val Venis where Shamrock vowed to get his title back but Venis claimed that Backlash wouldn’t be the last time where The Big Valbowski delivered where Ken Shamrock came up just a little bit short
  • Throughout the confrontation Steph’s eyes kept dropping to Venis’ pelvic region, when called out on it, she claimed it’s the title belt she’s looking at… it’s huge
  • It’s said that the WWF is steering harder than ever before into the racier content and Venis is an extension of that
  • The programme is said to remain heel vs heel but there’s nothing definitive about where Stephanie ends up at the end of the day

F yes. Can’t wait. Ok. Back to 85 for me.

YES!!!

I’m still in the 80s. Honestly, shocked so far. Magnum T.A. and “Ravishing” Rick Rude on top at the same time? Mustaches, mullets, and man meat was in demand. LOL.

Kane vs. Eddie Guerrero
Chyna is barred from ringside

WWF HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Hardcore Holly (c) vs. Edge

WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Mankind & Grandmaster Sexay (c) vs. The Radicalz (Saturn & Malenko)

NOTES

  • Scott Hall returned to the WWF under his Razor Ramon gimmick at a house show recently. It’ll be interesting to see how they repackage him moving forward
  • Bret Hart got this match by claiming that Venis got lucky at Backlash and couldn’t take him if a longer stipulation was in place. Venis snapped at the offer of an Iron Man match. Has the Big Valbowski bitten off more than he can chew?
  • WCW announcers did ask Russo & Bischoff whether they’ve considered that should Hogan & Gunn win and Brothers in Paint retain, WCW will be back to the exact same place it was before they reset the title picture. Russo and Bischoff walked off without a word

WWF JUDGMENT DAY RESULTS - MAY 21, 2000

  • Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart def. Val Venis in an Iron Man Match 9-4 to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship
    see notes
  • Ken Shamrock def. Mr McMahon in a Street Fight
    See notes
  • X-Pac (c) def. Owen Hart to retain the WWF Intercontinental Championship
  • Eddie Guerrero def. Kane in relatively short order
  • Hardcore Holly (c) def. Edge to retain the WWF Hardcore Championship
  • The Radicalz (Saturn & Malenko) def. Mankind & Grandmaster Sexay (c) to win the WWF Tag Team Titles when Malenko submitted Foley

NOTES

  • Bret stormed out to a 5-0 and 9-1 lead before Venis owned the last 7 minutes picking up 3 straight falls and clearly being in better shape for a 60 minute match. Although Bret won the match handily there was a bit of a double turn that took place here
  • Ken Shamrock def. Vince McMahon but McMahon put up a better fight defending his daughter’s honour than one would have expected. The cameras even picked up Steph sympathetically telling her father to ‘stay down’ so the match could end
  • Mick Foley is a 4 time tag champ with 4 different partners (Austin, Funk, The Rock, Sexay) and this makes him the first man to achieve such a feat. He’s also tied for most tag title reigns overall with Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart
  • Bret’s 4th WWF Title reign ties him with Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels for the best ever. People are starting to opine that Bret’s “Best there is, best there was, and the best there ever will be” might not just be a catchphrase.

WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION

Glad to see Bret end Val’s title reign. What a weird month. I guess WWF feels the need to be as unpredictable as WCW. Not necessarily in a good way.
