UPDATE THROUGH MAR 14, 1987 - SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT

The WWF held it’s most recent Saturday Night’s Main Event and there’s some key news that came out of the event.

Andre The Giant turned heel earlier in the month. The WWF Champion was joined by Bobby Heenan and attacked Hogan for Heenan said was bailing on his friend during his moment of triumph in the title celebration in January. Heenan later said that Hogan ‘ducked Andre’ during his time on top. It was rumoured that this was to build up for a Hogan vs. Andre match at Wrestlemania III but there have been contingents behind building to Andre vs. Piper or Andre vs. Tito at the Supercard as the crowd just isn’t getting behind Hogan this time.

The Tito backers will have a hard time as Savage def. Tito Santana to retain his IC title at SNME. Savage too is looking for a challenger for the supercard and although there are those inside the company petitioning for Ricky Steamboat, his push has been lukewarm to this point and there’s little proof that the fans will rally behind him.

Piper is still lined up to be going into movies though. It’s a hard choice for McMahon as he seems to have limited options at the top with Andre as a heel.

The Dismissal Committee shocked the world by def. The U.S. Express to become tag team champions. Jesse Ventura took the mic in a backstage segment and said that they haven’t been this happy since they retired Bruno Sammartino. In a separate interview David Sammartino has said that President Jack Tunney has allowed him to put his own career in the line for a 1 day reinstatement of his father, Bruno Sammartino and a tag title shot against the Dismissal Committee (Ventura & Studd) at Wrestlemania III

In the Main Event of SNME - Andre The Giant, Handsome Harley Race, and Paul Orndorff def. Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, and The Dog King, Junkyard Dog when Race pinned JYD. Shortly after this match, the WWF announced that at Wrestlemania III, Harley Race will face JYD with the crown on the line.

@Sancty So I guess I’m a little confused. Have you been influencing the outcomes of the simulations or doing the booking? Or just been letting the computer simulate the results and create the cards?

If the computer has been simulating the results and then booking the events based of those results for several events within the game then its shocking that it booked the same main event for WM3 as what happened in real life.

@RedRaider07 No influencing of the outcomes. I have a massive spreadsheet with all sorts of points being awarded for various things with multipliers and the whatnot. That is what leads the booking - not the game, as the game doesn’t differentiate between face/heel dynamics . I do step in and circumvent the spreadsheet with some of the booking from time-to-time and the Main Event was part of that but ithe game actually booked JYD/Race and Savage/Steamboat on its own. I will admit to filling out the card with Honky/Jake. Dismissal Committee vs Sammartinos was always on the cards for WM III but I didn’t have DC winning the titles as part of that story. When they won the straps at SNME, I just rolled with it.

Imagine it like a wrestling version of The Good Place. I mostly let the universe manage itself but occasionally I do some interference but never on the outcome of the matches.

  • The WWF is desperate for babyface challengers for Andre The Giant and the early push might be for Junkyard Dog. He’s easily the most over babyface in the company although insiders have said they don’t see the aging vet on that level.
  • The NWA doesn’t have any such problems as the fans are drooling over a matchup between Ric Flair and NWA Champion, Magnum T.A.

UPDATE THROUGH APRIL 28, 1987 - SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT

The WWF held it’s most recent Saturday Night’s Main Event and there’s some key news that came out of the event.

It’s a bit of a post-Wrestlemania hangover for the WWF as they try and establish their long-term plans. The roster is very heel-heavy at the top with WWF World Heavyweight Champion Andre & King Harley Race arguably the two biggest stars in the company. McMahon is also said to have no interest in keeping Randy Savage around the Intercontinental Championship scene and seems to be grooming him as one of the cornerstones of the industry going forward.

With the decline of Hulk Hogan and the departure of Roddy Piper, the only babyface with any serious Main Event appeal seems to be JYD - now free of the king gimmick, he seems a likely future challenger for Andre The Giant’s WWF World Title.

At the most recent SNME, Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik def. The Sammartinos to become the WWF World Tag Team Champions.

The tag scene in the WWF may never have been stronger with Volkoff/Sheik, The Sammartinos, The Hart Foundation, The Killer Bees, The British Bulldogs, Tama & Haku, The Rougeau Brothers, The Dream Team, The Can-Am Connection, and the Young Stallions all vying for spots on the card.

On that note, the Hart Foundation and British Bulldogs had a match of the year candidate. It’s a shame the feud has been overcomplicated with a supposedly crooked referee in Danny Davis and Tito Santana being wasted as a spare part. Maybe if there was a title involved, this would have legs but it just feels like overkill when the 2 teams should just be allowed to go at it…

Still not satisfied, Vince has told those in the know that he has plans for a team that will demolish the tag team ranks in the WWF but that’s all we’ve gotten from him so far.

Intercontinental Champion Ricky Steamboat def. Ron Bass in a rather pedestrian contest. The company needs to build some mid-card heels.

Also, newcomers such as the Honky Tonk Man and Jake Roberts are making small waves but are fighting to get TV time so the fans can understand their characters on a national scale.

It’s all business as usual for JCP but with the Crockett Cup about to kick off any day now - we can start to see the build towards The Great American Bash occurring.

UPDATE THROUGH MAY 28, 1987 - CROCKETT CUP

The NWA (via Jim Crockett Promotions) held their most recent iteration of the tag-team tournament known as the Crockett Cup and it was an interesting night.

Firstly, The Russian Team (NWA World Tag Team Champions) were eliminated in their first match despite being the freshest team after receiving a first-round bye. They went down to the patchwork tag team of Black Bart & Barry Windham.

Ole Anderson got a measure of revenge against former tag team partner Arn Anderson when he and Jimmy Valiant def. Arn & Kevin Sullivan. However, in his next/ matchup a pair of Horsemen, Ole & Jimmy couldn’t defeat the team of Tully Blanchard & Lex Luger.

After a shock double countout in one semi-final (Black Bart & Barry Windham vs. The Rock & Roll Express) it then meant that the other semi-final became the de-facto final. In this final, Tully & Lex defeated the odd-couple tag team of Ric Flair & Nikita Koloff.

Jim Crockett himself then came down and announced that there will be a main event and ordered the Russian Team to come down and defend the championships against the Crockett Cup Winners. The Russian team protested and demanded that Tully be made to defend his United States Championship as well.

The Russian team then def. Tully & Lex when Kruschev pinned Blanchard. Blanchard, however, was able to recover enough to defend his United States Championship against Jimmy Valiant to send the fans home somewhat happy (it was a night of shifting babyface/heel dynamics thanks to the Russian factor)

In other news, Adrian Adonis has called it a career in the WWF. He leaves behind a solid legacy but no-one is clamouring that we’ve lost an all-time great. Randy Savage has also turned babyface after coming to Ricky Steamboat’s defence against an attack by The Honky Tonk Man on WWF Superstars. Moreover, we have seen Rick Rude jump ship to the WWF who are arguably going to give Rick Rude a significant push. Buddy Landel & Dick Slater have also gone off to other pastures to ply their trade for the time being.

UPDATE THROUGH AUGUST 31, 1987 - THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH TOUR

The NWA (via Jim Crockett Promotions) held their most recent iteration of the Great American Bash tour and there have been a lot of highlights

Firstly, The Russian Team (NWA World Tag Team Champions) were finally defeated for the titles after a 341 day reign by the Midnight Express on July 4 in Atlanta. Although the Express were running as heels prior to this, the title win over the Russians turned the duo babyface. Jim Cornette is acting in more of a tweener role.

July 4 in Atlanta also saw the debut of a new match type, the War Games Match. The first ever match of this type saw The Road Warriors and Dusty Rhodes def. The Four Horsemen in the main event when Dusty pinned Flair

The title changes weren’t limited to Atlanta thought as at the July 18 show is Charlotte, Jimmy Valiant def. Tully Blanchard for the United States Championship and Arn Anderson & Lex Luger def. The Midnight Express for the titles after just 2 weeks in a match that was fraught with interference from both Jim Cornette & J.J. Dillon. There would be a rematch scheduled for July 31 inside a steel cage.

In the July 18 Main Event, Magnum T.A. continued his reign on top of the NWA by dispatching Flair again.

On July 31 though, the Horsemen would successfully retain their title in a steel cage match against the Midnight Express We also saw another War Games Match with The Road Warriors & Dusty losing to Flair, Tully, and Nikita Koloff when Flair submitted Dusty.

In the WWF we’re seeing some turnover as Corporal Kirchner retired and Ivan Putski has returned after a hiatus. Kirchner was never more over than when teaming with Paul Roma as “The Kid & The Corporal” and will likely just be a footnote of wrestling history. There are also three spotlight attractions that McMahon is said to be very interested in pushing strong out of the gate but we have yet to see any of them to this point.

We saw the debut of a few new faces in JCP this July with The Fabulous Freebirds, Rick Steiner, and a man called Sting all making their debuts. However, we also bid adieu to Wahoo McDaniel (a former United States Champion) and Blackjack Mulligan. Mulligan will fade into the ether but Wahoo’s late run of form might preserve his memory more in the minds of wrestling fans.

There is said to be some clamouring behind the scenes as both Starrcade and a new PPV from WWF called ‘Survivor Series’ are said to be scheduled for the same day in a power move from Vince McMahon with Wrestlemania being held hostage. We’ll have more on this as it progresses.

UPDATE THROUGH NOVEMBER 19, 1987 - STARRCADE PREVIEW

It’s been a wild 10 weeks in professional wrestling so here we go with all the news & notes from the Fall of 1987 in the WWF & the NWA

In the WWF Ricky Steamboat dropped the Intercontinental Title to the newly arrived Ravishing Rick Rude at a House Show, ending the Dragon’s reign at 187 days. However Rude would drop the title right back to Steamboat just 5 days later at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The two continue to feud over the title but Jake Roberts has many claiming he should be the #1 contender.

The WWF held their annual King of the Ring tournament and there was a shock result as Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell only went and won the whole thing, besting Ron Bass in the first round before shocking the world by eliminating Randy Savage, Junkyard Dog, and One Man Gang in the finals. Brunzell has claimed that he sees the kingship as the metaphor that it is and won’t be faffing about with any crown or cape. He just says that this means he’s the best in-ring competitor of his generation.

Shortly thereafter, The Killer Bees rode this momentum and took the titles off of Sheik & Volkoff. Sheik has since taken some time off while Nikolai Volkoff has already found a new tag team partner in Boris Zhukov, and they are calling themselves the Bolsheviks.

Andre The Giant continues to be a dominant force, seeing off repeated challenges from Junkyard Dog and besting Paul Orndorff at the most recent SNME taping. Who can beat Andre for the World Title?

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage have formed a union in the form of the Mega Powers. They don’t appear to be chasing tag team gold but both men have been running a bit cold as of late and this sometimes tag-team is paying dividends in the short term. How long can these 2 stay as a supporting act is anyone’s guess. Hogan really needed something though.

Cowboy Bob Orton is reportedly winding up with the company soon, although his status as a former WWF World Heavyweight Champion does give him some leverage either home or away.

The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase has debuted but it’s been his bodyguard Virgil who has been more impressive in the short term. Equally, Demolition have just debuted but have been underwhelming as they went to a double countout with The Young Stallions in their debut on SNME.

The NWA is gearing up for their biggest show of the year as they have moved their event one week sooner and the WWF is now locked into their date. They will both have exclusive audiences. Both Ric Flair and Ole Anderson were the #1 contenders for the World Title and U.S. Title respectively but have been involved in a blood feud since the Great American Bash when Flair attacked Ole with a bat and told him it was time for the old dog to be put down. Their blood feud will be settled at Starrcade.

UPDATE THROUGH JANUARY 2 1988 - SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT

The WWF is the domain of Andre The Giant. Whether it’s Hogan, Junkyard Dog, or Paul Orndorff, Andre has proven unbeatable as his reign will certainly now pass the 1 year mark. Heenan’s mouthpiece, Bobby Heenan has been dropping in interviews that Andre is undercompensated for the gates he is bringing the WWF and has publicly called on WWF President Jack Tunney to increase Andre’s take of the gate if they want their champion to appear.

McMahon’s big three new acts are slow out of the gate with Ultimate Warrior appearing dominant but showing up very sporadically on the cards while Ted DiBiase has been all but invisible and Demolition are slowly starting to find some momentum. The big acquisition is Ravishing Rick Rude who people are already talking about as a headliner.

In short, the midcard in the WWF is beyond bloated with IC Champ Ricky Steamboat going weeks between appearances.

Everything old is new again in the tag division though as Nikolai Volkoff finds himself holding tag team gold with his new partner, Boris Zhukov as The Bolsheviks topped The Killer Bees at SNME.

In the NWA, Ric Flair is the biggest fish in a small pond and many think it’s time to put the belt back on The Nature Boy at Bunkhouse Stampede.

On that note, people are excited for the Bunkhouse Stampede pay per view, especially the Bunkhouse Stampede Battle Royal which will close out the show. Top talents such as Dusty Rhodes, Barbarian, Magnum T.A., Jimmy Valiant, and Arn Anderson are among the competitors.

The WWF will be responding with their own Pay Per View, The Royal Rumble, just a week later from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. No-one quite knows what the Royal Rumble is but it’s exciting to see more PPVs available from Wrestling’s finest companies.

UPDATE THROUGH MARCH 26 1988 - WRESTLEMANIA IV PREVIEW

The WWF World Heavyweight Championship is vacant. Andre threatened not to show for The Big Event on NBC unless Jack Tunney gave him a bigger cut of the gate. Tunney refused but Andre showed up, walked down the aisle to face his opponent, the Junkyard Dog. The match unfolded with JYD getting a shoulder up off the mat on 1 but referee Dave Hebner counting the 3 regardless. Andre immediately announced he had surrendered the WWF World Heavyweight Championship to The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase.

Jack Tunney shortly thereafter declared the switch as null in void and declared a 15 man tournament after JYD insisted on a first round matchup with Ted DiBiase. The bracket for the vacant 15 man title is as follows

Demolition has finally found some momentum but The Ultimate Warrior is still very much a work in progress with behind the scenes reports indicating that his workrate isn’t up to scratch and people don’t want to bump for him, let alone lay down for him.

The Killer Bees regained their tag team titles at The Big Event and appear destined for a showdown with Demolition at Wrestlemania IV

In the NWA, Magnum T.A. is once again the World’s Champion after absolutely squashing Nikita Koloff in the Main Event of the very first Clash of the Champions.

There are also new tag team champions as the Midnight Express reclaimed the titles back from The Four Horsemen. As soon as this happened, Luger was jumped by Arn and the rest of the Horsemen who threw him out with the aid of Luger’s supposed friend Barry Windham, who ran down for the save only to double-cross Luger in a swerve that no-one saw coming.

The WWF held their first Royal Rumble event on USA television which drew huge numbers and saw Sam Houston win the event. Hillbilly Jim was a dominant force in the matchup though, and Jim Duggan & Jake Roberts had good runs as well. Bret Hart, Dino Bravo, and Tito Santana were underutilised and The Ultimate Warrior had an absolute embarrassment of a night.
