WCW IS GOING EXPLOSIVE IN PRIME TIME

  • This coming Monday, World Championship Wrestling will go toe-to-toe with the World Wrestling Federation as they debut Monday Night Nitro on TNT. The first episode is coming live from the Mall of America and Eric Bischoff is said to have some big surprises in store
  • It looks as if Mike Rotunda is done with the WWF and is moving across to WCW
  • Big Van Vader is done with WCW for now and will be looking for other opportunities
  • Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell has called it a career. He was a 2-time Tag Team Champion and the 1987 King of the Ring
  • We have received word on the passing of The Rock, Don Muraco. We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of The Rock. He was 46.

WELCOME TO THE NITRO ERA

  • 2 massive surprises came out of this episode. One we knew something about going in; one we didn’t. The first is the debut of Michael Wallstreet - although no-one expected him to be going over World Champion Ric Flair clean on his WCW return. The two will go head to head for the gold at Fall Brawl
  • The thing no-one knew though was the appearance of Lex Luger in the Main Event. The first shots fired in what some are calling ‘The Monday Night War’ certainly makes Ted Turner’s product a lot more interesting than it was just a few months ago.

Wait… your simulation KILLED Don Muraco?!

I have a simulator effect for an entire litany of things - including a minute percentage which can result in the death of someone in the sim. That is what’s happened here.

THE NITRO ERA CONTINUES TO BE REVOLUTIONARY

  • Lex Luger defeated Michael Wallstreet this week and Ricky Steamboat gave Ric Flair his 2nd pinfall loss in a fortnight.
  • WCW management has decided that the World title will have to be defended twice in one night. The first time against Michael Wallstreet. The champion after that match has occurred will defend the title against Ricky Steamboat. Lex Luger will then be the first challenger for whoever comes out as the champion at Halloween Havoc

As a fan from Texas, seeing Kerry Von Erich being WWF champion in 1995 warms my heart.

BIG BUBBA ROGERS OUT WITH INJURY

  • It’s said that Ray Traylor (Big Bubba Rogers, Big Boss Man in WWF), has suffered a bicep injury and will be out for quite some time
  • Ronnie Garvin has somehow managed to organise a move to WCW for his comeback run. He’s already debuted on Nitro showing that anyone could show up at any time. Those at Titan Tower aren’t that concerned. Yes, they rushed to put the title on Michael Wallstreet for 45 minutes and Lex wasn’t exactly a small star, the WWF believes in its New Generation and don’t feel there’s anything that can damage them in the current landscape
  • There are those in WCW looking at moving on from 2 Cold Scorpio now that his U.S. Title run is over. Those in the back feel as though he’s not main event material and that such a long run with the belt means anything else is a retread or step back.
  • WCW are looking at investing in some new cruiserweights and have just signed Eddie Guerrero fresh off a run in Paul Heyman’s ECW. The youngster from El Paso, Texas should be debuting on television any day now.

CAN BRET WIN THE BIG ONE?

  • It seemed to be tailor-made. Bret Hart challenged Kerry Von Erich at the Main Event of In Your House 4 in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada but once again was unable to win the big one. Arguably the hottest thing in the WWF if not all of wresting, Bret was again bested by a World Champion after coming up short against Shawn Michaels back in July. Maybe Bret is destined to be one of those all-time ‘so-close-but-never-was’ legends you hear about like Roddy Piper or Randy Savage.

Wait, in this continuity was Macho never World champion?

He’s never really caught fire. Same for Undertaker. Actually Taker might be the biggest disappointment to this point.

THE HORSEMEN REFORM… OH WHAT A RUSH!

  • At the conclusion of WCW Halloween Havoc, Ric Flair came out and cut a promo on World Champion Ricky Steamboat where he reformed the 4 Horsemen. Out in turn came Arn Anderson, Brian Pillman, and Chris Benoit. Ric told Steamboat that he showed Sting tonight what it meant to go up against the Horsemen and in the coming weeks and months he’ll show Steamboat. He’ll show Savage. He’ll show Hogan. He’ll show the Warrior. There’s no-one in WCW that they won’t run over.

Oh… what a rush

  • This is when the Road Warriors made their return to WCW. All the confidence left the faces of the Horsemen as Hawk, Animal, and Paul Ellering walked down the aisle. The Horsemen and Steamboat stood toe to toe with The Four Horsemen as Halloween Havoc went off the air.

WE HARDLY KNEW YOU

  • There’s been a rash of retirments in recent weeks
  • King Kong Bundy has retired at the age of 40. A big man loaded with potential, he never really made that sustained main event splash many had him tipped for. Most will remember him for either filling out the card as a big man in the Rock & Wrestling Era or losing to Ted DiBiase in the employee vs boss storyline at WrestleMania XI
  • Kato/Paul Diamond has retired at the age of 34. He might bounce around for Paul Heyman from time to time but it’s unlikely you’ll see him in full time wrestling again. He was part of the Orient Express team that had a legendary 512 day run from Apr 92-Aug 93
  • Man Mountain Rock retired at the age of 34. Never has someone with so little been given so much of a look
  • Waylon Mercy/Dan Spivey retried at the age of 43. It’s a shame he never really caught on in his Waylon Mercy gimmick. Just the story of the right gimmick too late into a wrestler’s run. Spivey was a former tag team champion with Mike Rotundo as the American Express
  • Tim Horner has retired from Professional Wrestling at the age of 36. He did very little of note in WCW and now may do some journeyman dates but he’s done with a large promotion
  • Doink retired. He never really caught on with the public
  • After a brief run with WCW, Kamala has retired
