Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson along with his business partner Dany Garcia partnered with RedBird Capital to purchase the XFL football league in August. The two parties paid a total of $15 million for the failed football league and today, Johnson announced that the XFL is returning in the Spring of 2022.
XFL returns SPRING 2022 🏈
As owners, we’re proud to champion our XFL players, coaches, cities and fans into an electrifying 2022 season!
It’s an uphill battle – but we’re hungry, humble and no one will outwork us.
The XFL was officially revived by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon in January of 2018 and the league relaunched in February of 2020. After only several weeks of play, the league shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three days after the league suspended operations, Chapter 11 bankruptcy was filed.
I mean, to be fair, it didn’t really “fail” the second time, it had its inaugural season during a pandemic.
Not saying it would have succeeded, but I look at that as more of a fluke opposed to an indicator of whether or not it could succeed. There is big money in football, and I think there is room for another league. They will never compete with the NFL, but firmly believe the NFL could work with them as some type of minor league system.
I’d think he is going to get a TV deal for real money by then. Just him alone will drive a bid. That will cover the cost of the purchase he made. HA! I have a feeling we won’t be seeing Rocky at WWE events any time soon given his Biden endorsement + XFL success.
A little. If your into Football you probably would have enjoyed it.
I’m guessing the Rocks endgame for this is to turn it into a Minor League for the NFL. Kind of like in Baseball or the G League for Basketball. NFL has been crying for one since NFL Europe went bellyup.
Now lets see if he continues Vince strategy of owning the League all by himself. Or is he going to get other owners involved and let them run teams. The way a Sports League is suppose to run.
