Tony Khan: "I have no plans to disappoint anybody tonight"

Hours before “The First Dance” at The United Center, AEW President Tony Khan appeared on Busted Open Radio to preview the show and what fans can expect:

It’s great to be able to have those possibilities and not to have everything spoiled for you but on the other hand, I think everybody has a pretty good idea of what to expect tonight and I don’t like to let people down and I have no plans to disappoint anybody tonight. I think people are going to be very happy with what they see, they’ve been waiting to see this for a long time and finally at ‘The First Dance’ we are going to satisfy a lot of people and make a lot of wrestling fans really happy and we’re going to make some new fans. There are going to be people that are going to read about what happened tonight and they’re going to want to go check out AEW and that’s exactly the reaction we’re looking for.

AEW has been deliberate to never mention the name CM Punk beyond the reference by Darby Allin to the “Best in the World”.

According to WrestleTix, the show is virtually sold out at The United Center in Chicago with 14,190 tickets out in the market with less than 200 available.

The show airs at 10 p.m. ET on TNT and TSN Direct in Canada (it will air on TSN 2 on a one-hour delay at 11 p.m.) with the following matches announced:
*Jon Moxley vs. Daniel Garcia
*Jade Cargill vs. Kiera Hogan
*Tag Team Eliminator: Private Party vs. Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus

Strange question - but what time in the UK will Rampage air? I’ve just signed up to Fite.tv genuinely excited

What if cult of personality hits, then Khan comes out with a new heel and cuts a promo “ohhhh were you expecting someone else you marks” the heat would be insane!

I don’t think that would be a good idea lol, and it would definitely hurt them, but in that moment can you imagine😂

This has been one of the most refreshing builds to a major TV show in a long long time. Not ever specifically giving it away and trusting your audience to know what’s up. Trusting your promotion to attract new fans when they hear what’s up.

John made a great point that for years we wanted an alternative and now we have one we compare it to what we’ve become accustom to for 20 years. Having an alternative rules. It’s fun to debate which is better at what. Not since WWE in 2010 when Rock returned has something felt so anticipated and that was really really under-wraps. Maybe the Hunter/Taker double return was promoted through vignettes.

AEW has stuck to its roots of being a word-of-mouth promotion on this one. It’s admirable and I hope it pays off on the business side. I can’t wait on the fan side.

Only thing I can think of would be Edges RR return in 2020, people didnt know for sure, but rumors were all over the place. Agree with everything else.

If I were booking, I’d have Darby come out and call out the “best in the world” the Bulls entrance song plays and the fans go nuts, but the Wingmen come out and think Darby was talking about them.

The Wingmen beat he shit outta Darby and Sting, until cult of personality hits and Punk shows up. He helps take out the Wingmen and accepts Darbys challenge.

I want to see the show open with Cult of Personality and have MJF come out to troll the audience.

After the main event the lights go out, they come back on and it’s MJF and Wardlow laughing.

Finally the lights go out again, Alan Parsons Project plays and out comes Punk to an ungodly pop and he clears the ring.

Not many have been as well kept

Y2J in WWE was thought to be him but not confirmed. But it was telegraphed. Brock at RAW was similar. It was telegraphed but not overtly spoiled. Goldberg on RAW after WM19 the same.

Sting at WWE SS was similar unexpected.

Probably the biggest WWE ones in terms of totally unexpected return is the John Cena RR return and Warrior at WM8,

Shane McMahon coming back was a pretty big recent one and it came completely out of nowhere

This one yes!
Very few have been delicately hinted it. The Edge example was great.

In terms of his surprise return when he announced himself as Mania 17 host - that was a huge surprise. I remember in the weeks leading up to it, the rumour at the time was Justin Bieber was coming in to host.
