BPC Boxing Report

Over the weekend we had 2 major fights go down, both of which are worth your time. First Vasyl Lomachenko made a successful comeback defeating Masayoshi Nakatani by TKO in the 9th round. This was a tailor made fight for Lomachenko but Nakatani had given Teófimo López (the man to defeat Lomo in his previous bout) a tough time in their fight. Lomachenko looked good right out of the blocks, which is something that cost him the López fight. Nakatani is a tough fighter, hard to finish and Lomo made a statement. This sets up a huge rematch with Teófimo López if he can win his next fight against George Kambosos. López was scheduled to fight Kambosos on June 15th but he tested positive for Covid so the fight has been moved to August 14th. This is a Triller branded event that has already had some serious issues, so we shall see if this fight makes it to market.

In the second major fight on Saturday, Mayweather Promotions contender Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis was able to stop previously undefeathed Mario Barrios in what was a tremendous fight that saw a ton of high stakes drama including a mid-fight update to Davis from Floyd Mayweather. Of the two fights from the weekend, this was the better one. The Atlanta crowd was super hot and Davis delivered under pressure in a big way.
A future fight between Davis and Lomachenko seems perfect but because both are under different promoters, it’s a fair distance away. Davis is a great fighter with serious KO power but he still needs to be exposed to a larger audience before a massive fight can occur and he is undersized for his division. He’ll likely continue to face Mayweather/Showtime fighters for the near future.

One last note, Teófimo López’s father & trainer has to be one of the most entertaining people in all of combat sports. He’s not remotely afraid to speak freely about the competition his son is going to face, the state of boxing and anything else that comes to mind. His little bit of wackyness always makes for a fantastic interview. When that Lomachenko rematch happens, Senior is going to be a big part of the build up.
