Closing out New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Wrestling Dontaku event on 5/3 was Hiroshi Tanahashi defending the NEVER Openweight Championship against Jay White. The conclusion of the match saw Jay getting his hand raised and adding to the list of titles he has captured in NJPW.

Tanahashi walked into the match with one successful title defense against Great-O-Khan in February. Tanahashi won the title from Shingo Takagi earlier in the year.

Along with being the current NEVER Openweight Champion, Jay White has also held the IWGP U.S Heavyweight, Intercontinental and Heavyweight Championships since his return to New Japan in November of 2017.

Jay: The first ever NEVER, Intercontinental US and Heavyweight Champion! I am the REAL belt collector, and if you dispute that, you know where to find me. 👀

Jay calling out Omega in his post-match promo has me quite giddy.

I just watched this match and enjoyed it. A lot of good work from both working over each other’s knees, though I thought the finish kind of came out of nowhere, with White hitting the Blade Runner after escaping a Full Nelson. Strong post-match promo to tease some cross-promotional action.

Also, an email from Tokon Shop alerted me to today being the Bullet Club’s eighth birthday, so a fitting start to it.
