John Pollock & Wai Ting review both nights of NJPW’s New Beginning in Hiroshima 2021 shows headlined by Kota Ibushi vs. SANADA for the Double Championship and Hiromu Takahashi vs. SHO for the Jr. Heavyweight Championship.

Also on the show, a pair of controversial finishes leaves several talking points as Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. seek to regain the “Iron Fingers from Hell” (and the IWGP Tag Titles) from G.O.D., and Kazuchika Okada continues to goad EVIL to agree to a 1-on-1 encounter.

We also discuss New Japan’s propensity for longer match durations and its effect on the overall quality of the show, the possible unification of the IWGP Double Championship and the man trying to prevent it, Zack Sabre Jr. on commentary, AEW Dynamite footage appearing on NJPW World, and more.

Really enjoyed this show, guys, and my thoughts are pretty much sympatico. This was a pair of “best of times, worst of times” pair of cards. Both main events were solid and enjoyable but suffered from a bit of WK hangover, while the undercards had all manner of ups and downs. Hell, on the heels of what I thought might have been Wato’s best singles match yet (WH should be happy he’s ditched the velour) he had that terrible finishing sequence the next night. As to the question about Okada/Evil, on paper the Raw-style “we don’t need to wait until Sunday” fucked-finish should have helped build some anticipation, but really I just find myself asking if Okada will be in the position of pre-emptively apologizing for the matches the way Naito did. I guess it’s better than him farting around with Yujiro again.

…Also, between someone from my hometown (El-P) and a fellow vegan socialist (ZSJ), I couldn’t help but feel as though the English commentary was being scheduled especially for me. :stuck_out_tongue:
