WRESTLEMANIA IV RESULTS

  • Ravishing Rick Rude def. Nikolai Volkoff in the finals to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship
  • Don ’ The Rock’ Muraco def. Ricky 'The Dragon Steamboat © to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship
  • Demolition def. The Killer Bees © to win the WWF World Tag Team Titles
  • Bret Hart won a 20 man Battle Royal by last eliminating Bad News Brown (legitimately)

In other notes:

  • Andre is said to be hot that his title reign was ended just to showcase another heel, and another Bobby Heenan heel at that
  • Ted DiBiase tried to pay off JYD to start their match in the 1st round and was unsuccessful. DiBiase is vowing revenge after losing to JYD in the ensuing match
  • It’s said that the layout of Wrestlemania IV was a mess with both MegaPowers losing by the 2nd round and Andre losing to Volkoff in the semis. Who were the fans supposed to be cheering for?
  • David Sammartino has left the WWF. The company hadn’t had much for him since the big Sammartino tag title win at Wrestlemania III
  • It’s said the WWF is interested in running Mega Powers vs Hogan & Andre this summer at a new Pay Per View called Summerslam but fans are wanting to see more of JYD/DiBiase
  • People are ready to write off The Ultimate Warrior. He’s not connecting with the fans and his match with Hercules was cancelled at the last moment

UPDATE THROUGH JULY 10 1988 - THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH RESULTS

It’s been a season of change in the world of professional wrestling, especially in the National Wrestling Alliance. Magnum T.A. dropped his World’s Heavyweight Title to Ric Flair at the Crockett Cup but then regained the belt less than 3 months later at the Great American Bash PPV.

The NWA continued their successful TV special, Clash of the Champions and saw a new United States Champion crowned in Ron Simmons, who took the belt off of Jimmy Valiant after almost a year (it’s rumoured that Valiant is thinking about retiring now that he appears to be sliding down the card). However, Ric Flair interfered in Simmons’ title match at The Great American Bash and now the new United States Champion is Kevin Sullivan.

This season of change didn’t leave the tag belts alone though. The Crockett Cup was won by a makeshift team of ex-Horsemen, Lex Luger and Ole Anderson (current Horsemen lineup equals Ric, Arn, Tully, and Barry Windham) but they were unsuccessful at Clash of the Champions in their championship opportunity against the Midnight Express. However, Kevin Sullivan’s Varsity Club (Rick Steiner & Mike Rotunda) were able to get the job done at The Great American Bash. Mike Rotunda has now won the tag titles twice in the WWF and once in the NWA. He may be among the greatest tag wrestlers of all time.

In the WWF, the Fed seems intent on pushing Bad News Brown and Ted DiBiase while the mega team of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage is getting some traction. Vince continues to invest in tag team wrestlers with the young and energetic Rockers set to debut any day now and The Powers of Pain making the jump from the NWA to the WWF. The Ultimate Warrior is seeing more usage and Ray Traylor has just debuted in the WWF as The Big Boss Man. There’s definitely significant turnover in the land of giants

Meanwhile in the NWA, there are those who are arguing that Sting should be a bigger deal than he currently is and there is a growing concern that the Varsity Club may be overexposed with the amount of gold they currently hold. If this is an arms race they seem severely overpowered (although Vince’s roster also seems beyond bloated).

Summerslam is said to be a bit of a hot mess to plan at the moment. There is a plan to feature a tag match in the Main Event we’re told but Ted DiBiase’s inability to get over at the level expected may cause some shifts in the original lineup.

SUMMERSLAM RESULTS

  • The Heenan Family def. The Mega Powers w/ Special Referee Ted DiBiase when Rude pinned Savage
  • Hillbilly Jim def. Don ‘The Rock’ Muraco © to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship in under 40 seconds (legit)
  • Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) def. King Harley Race to become King of the WWF
  • Demolition © def. The Hart Foundation to retain the WWF World Tag Team Titles
  • Bret Hart won a 20 man Battle Royal by last eliminating Bad News Brown (legitimately)
  • Big Boss Man def. Koko B. Ware
  • Strike Force def. The British Bulldogs
  • The Ultimate Warrior def. Honky Tonk Man in Honky’s open challenge

In other notes:

  • Andre is clearly limited in the ring and this tag match only showcased this further. It is thought that this is why the decision was made to take the title of Andre with the tournament the safest way around that
  • Vince McMahon still has Ted DiBiase as a long-term project but they realise more time is necessary
  • The Ultimate Warrior is starting to gain reactions now. It is rumoured that Vince sees him as the kind of megababyface the company hasn’t seen since Bob Backlund.
  • Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura has retired from the ring. The former tag team champion is moving into a commentary role for the company. He’s been said to have legitimate chemistry with both Gorilla Monsoon and Vince McMahon
  • The hoarding of tag teams by the WWF continues. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard have moved over to the Fed and are being managed by Bobby Heenan as The Brain Busters and Vince has also introduced Los Conquistadores
  • The NWA seems to be winning the war against Vince & co so far with Magnum T.A. and Ric Flair unquestionably the biggest stars in the industry. If it was just Ric Flair (he’s 39), there might be a concern but Magnum T.A. has a least a decade of high level appearances ahead of him.
  • The company appears to be phasing out Harley Race as they’ve turned him babyface after being betrayed by Bobby Heenan and losing the crown. They feel the King gimmick still has value and will try it with a newly singles Haku
  • Kevin Sullivan is on the end of a megapush from the NWA as he’s been given the United States title
  • Ron Simmons & Ric Flair appear to be on a collision course for Starrcade. If they can keep the interest in the feud going from the Great American Bash through to December
  • Despite a moderate IC run, Don Muraco is now the record holder for the longest time spent as champion throughout his 3 reigns. (696 days)
  • Hercules has turned babyface at the end of a slave trader angle with Ted DiBiase and Bobby Heenan. The company is definitely going all-out to get Ted over as a heel

UPDATE THROUGH DECEMBER 7 1988 - SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT RESULTS

It’s been a wild few months in the world of professional wrestling.

The WWF held their second Survivor Series Pay Per View which was notable for a few key events. First, Vince had almost all the babyfaces go over, perhaps in preparation for a heel heavy title scene as we round the corner towards Wrestlemania.

The Blue Blazer (who we believe to be Owen Hart) debuted in an opening singles matchup with Steve Lombardi and was attacked by WWF World Heavyweight Champion. This would set up a match between the two for the biggest prize under the WWF umbrella at the next SNME taping.

There was a match for the ages as The Powers of Pain & The Hart Foundation def. The Brainbusters and WWF Tag Team Champions, Demolition. The Barbarian was the sole survivor but after the match he wouldn’t stop attacking Smash under the guidance of Mr Fuji who left with the Powers of Pain and left Demolition laying. It appears we have seen the rarest of wrestling events - the double turn.

At the SNME we saw The Million Dollar Man capture the Intercontinental Championship from Hillbilly Jim. There had been a lot of anti-working man rhetoric in the build-up to the title match and when DiBiase won he was instantly attacked from behind by Virgil who refused to give Ted the $100 to stick in Hillbilly’s mouth. Although some folks are thinking they’d have kept DiBiase and Virgil together for another 3 years or so, they’re making the call right now. Will Ted get himself another manservant?

December has been a month of massive change with B. Brian Blair, Manny Fernandez, Dynamite Kid, Ken Patera, and Buddy Roberts all retiring from the business while Davey Boy Smith, and Jimmy Garvin are taking some time off. The Sheepherders have jumped to the WWF where they will be used in more of a comedic role, and Abdullah The Butcher and Junkyard Dog have moved to the NWA where JYD has himself a golden opportunity as he’s been hotshotted into the Main Event picture with a world title shot an almost certainty in the coming weeks.

UPDATE THROUGH FEBRUARY 20, 1989 - CHI-TOWN RUMBLE

Stuff is starting to get interesting

The WWF held their 2nd Royal Rumble event and an interesting moment saw Demolition’s Ax and Smash drawing #1 and #2 respectively. Ax threw Smash out within 5 seconds of the match starting. Ax, Warlord and Ted DiBiase were all recognised as the iron man of the rumble while Hulk Hogan and Big John Studd tied for the most eliminations with 4 each. Last year’s winner, Sam Houston, was thrown out mere seconds after hitting the ring - although not quite as short as The Ultimate Warrior’s spot last year. The Rumble was ultimately won by Big John Studd (legit!) which was surprising as we hadn’t heard any whispers of a push for the big man but surely he must fit into the Wrestlemania V picture somewhere.

JCP has been purchased by Ted Turner and is now going under the World Championship Wrestling that used to just be the name of the television programme JCP ran under on Turner broadcasting. They hosted their first PPV of 1989, the Chi-Town Rumble and we saw The Original Midnight Express defeat the Midnight Express in a loser leaves WCW match. We also saw Ricky Steamboat defeat Ric Flair in a singles match-up, Flair then interfered unsuccessfully as Barry Windham submitted Kevin Sullivan and Ron Simmons shocked the world by defeating Magnum T.A. to become the NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion. Ron Simmons is wrestling’s first black world heavyweight champion.

Just got caught up reading the last 16 posts( Its been awhile my bad). Man shocked to see JYD near the top of card. What would Meltzer think of this? Love that Rick Rude,Ron Simmons and Magnum TA have been world champs. Curious to see what happens in the new WCW regime. Midnight Express taking jump to WWF is a huge shockwave. WWF is loaded with Tag Teams! I enjoy reading these and glad you still continue posting them.
