The Great Simulation Do-over (Updated through WWF Judgment Day Results: May 20, 2001)

So right on schedule for Marty to get fired for drugs?

Essentially yeah.

I may not have lost interest in wrestling at this time if this was the lineup. Just looked at the real line up for RR96 and it was shocking

Just checked as well… what a terrible card.

Two DQs (including a 28 minute main event with no finish), the Gunns/Donnas/Godwinns tag team era, and the most telegraphed Royal Rumble winner since Hulk Hogan was fighting for America in 91. Plus Shawn hitting the point where he gets more insufferable every month.

You’re not wrong. I was out of wrestling at this time as well. Vader was guaranteed a spot from 16-30 but that’s all that happened. With the final 4 that worked out, there were storylines whichever way it went. but Vader throwing out Yokozuna last was a best case scenario.

DEAD MAN WALKING

  • It’s said that Mark Callaway (The Undertaker) has come to terms with Vince McMahon on a new long term contract. A sizable push is expected. There are those behind-the-scenes who feel that The Undertaker is someone they’ve missed the mark with to this point.
  • WCW is on an absolute hiring spree as they’re looking to distinguish themselves from the WWF. They are looking at many smaller wrestlers as they redefine what it means to be a pro wrestler in the 1990s. That being said, they also love themselves a big man.

STRESSES IN STANFORD?

  • We’re hearing that the reason for the hotshotting of the WWF World Title from Michaels to Flamingo to Bret is twofold. The first is Shawn’s refusal to go up against Vader at Mania due to his stiff style and secondly, Shawn’s ‘outright refusal’ to put Bret over under any circumstances. It’s all hearsay at this point but you get the feeling the WWF has been trying to make Bret the next big thing in the company for a couple of years now and it’s always been Shawn standing in the way up top.
  • Bret is 38 years old but could have a solid half-decade at the top ahead of him. It’ll be worth keeping an eye on Titan Tower moving forward.

Losing the Brett Shawn main event!
I just looked back at this event and even though I’ve seen it I have zero recollection of the 3on3 with team Vader vs team Yokozuna.
The Huckster vs Nacho man as well, seriously. This is your biggest event what the hell was Vince thinking. The rest of the card is pretty good on paper and similar to yours but how often does talent get badly used. In a scripted sport you’d think this would happen less then it does.

Yeah. I’m kinda using a Doctor Who format for this where certain things are just fixed points in history, (The WrestleMania IV tournament, The 1992 Royal Rumble for a vacant title), but Bret vs Shawn wasn’t one of those things to me.

1996 HALL OF FAME CLASS

1996 HEADLINER - ANDRE THE GIANT
Andre was a dominant force in wrestling over his illustrious career and for 394 days held the biggest prize in the sport, vacating it eventually over a pay dispute which led to the infamous championship tournament at WrestleMania IV Andre was also a tag team champion with Haku. Andre went 5-2 at Wrestlemania (5-1 in singles action and 5-0 in his first match of the night). The highlight of his career would have to be when he successfully defended his World Title against Hulk Hogan in front of 93,000 plus in the Pontiac Silverdome in the Main Event of WrestleMania III

1996 INDUCTEE - JUNKYARD DOG
JYD was a fan favourite for those in the golden era of the WWF. A former Intercontinental champion, frequent Main Eventer, and an unlikely King of the Ring. Many remember the iconic feud between Harley Race and the Dog King, JYD which culminated in his losing of the crown at WrestleMania III. JYD didn’t have luck on his side under the brightest of lights only going 1-3 at Wrestlemania

1996 ENTRANT - RAVISHING RICK RUDE
The Ravishing One had a brief but intense run with the WWF, capturing both the Intercontinental Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship within his first year with the company. Rude then went on to hold the WWF Championship for over a year (371 days), winning the Tournament to crown the vacant champion at WM IV beating Jim Duggan, Ron Bass, Sam Houston and Nikolai Volkoff in the same night and then losing the belt in the Main Event of WrestleMania V. Although he only appeared at 2 WrestleManias, Rude main evented both and went 4-1 at the Grandaddy of Them All.

1996 ENTRANT - JUMPIN’ JIM BRUNZELL
In perhaps the greatest case of overachievement on this list, Jim Brunzell managed to elevate himself from midcard tag team act to a long and lengthy WWF career after a storybook Cinderella run to winning the 1987 King of the Ring beating Ron Bass, Randy Savage, Junkyard Dog, and One Man Gang to take the crown. Brunzell was also a 2 time tag team champion with The Killer Bees totalling 147 days with the gold and are known for being the team to drop the tag belts to Demolition that started their record 671 day reign as champions. Brunzell only appeared at the 1 WrestleMania, losing the tag straps to Demolition and taking the fall

1996 ENTRANT - BIG JOHN STUDD
The man who claimed to retire Bruno Sammartino, Studd lost to Andre at the original WrestleMania but is probably most closely linked with WrestleMania III and losing the tag belts (which he held with Jesse Ventura) to the Sammartinos Studd did win the 1989 Royal Rumble match and is 1-3 at WrestleMania with the one victory occurring over a recent debut by the name of The Undertaker, who was making his first appearance at the event
